The Trouble With Sleep
How many times have you crawled into bed exhausted from the day only to find yourself wide awake?
For some reason it seems like all of our worst fears, embarrassing moments and troublesome thoughts play before us like a movie reel. Instead of having a wonderful nights sleep like we envisioned, we are kept up by those daunting thoughts.
There have been countless nights where I have been haunted by embarrassing moments that happened months ago, years ago, or even in elementary school! At times I'm up having fake arguments in my head with people. Other times, I'm visualizing myself in horrific scenarios that will most certainly never happen.
At times like these it feels like I'll never be able to sleep so I might as well not even try. But that's not the way to go. Often times when I do eventually fall asleep, I'll wake up in the morning feeling more exhausted than that I was that night. And some times I'm even cranky.
Over the years, I learned a simple trick to help me quiet my mind. Breathing. It's literally that simple. All you have to do is lay flat on your back and tell yourself, in through the nose, hold, out through the mouth. Repeat. You will start to feel your body beginning to relax. Your voice will be a little slower as you continue to tell yourself to inhale, hold, exhale. (It's much better to say it out loud because it allows your mind to stay fixed on completing the task instead of having it wandering about).
To spice things up a little, you can ask God, Allah, the Universe, etc., to take away all the negative thoughts from your mind and to help you fall asleep. It doesn't have to be those exact words. Make it your own. Make it personal. As you talk to your own special being remember to breathe in and out.
Before you know it you will be fast asleep and well rested!
